Name: Dorian Caractacus Goyle Parents: Gregory Goyle and Daphne Greengrass Blood: Pure Birthday: 8th November House and year: 6th year Slytherin
family
In romance novels, arranged marriages always have a way of turning into passionate love affairs. Real life, Daphne Greengrass was disappointed to discover, apparently doesn't work that way. Instead of a dashing mysterious hero, she ended up with Gregory Goyle, a boy she'd known most of her life, but never really spared much of a thought for. She'd always seen him as little more than one of Draco Malfoy's shadows, and basically interchangeable with Vincent Crabbe. Still, there are worse things than marrying for convenience, and Daphne and Greg are relatively content despite their mutual indifference. They move around the edges of pureblooded society, not quite rich enough or charming enough to be very popular, but respectable nonetheless and somewhat obsessed with staying that way.
Dorian is very much a product of his parents' passionless and proper union. All his life, it's been made very clear what's expected of him. He'll make the right connections at school, join the family business and find a pureblooded woman to bear him sons. It's a testament to his thorough indoctrination that this really doesn't bother him that much. He doesn’t question it.
He had a happy enough childhood - his mother was affectionate and his father was perhaps distant, but never cruel. He has one brother, three years younger and in Dorian's opinion, mentally defective. Their home life was stable and almost uneventful. It's never been the kind of household where dishes and hexes are thrown on a regular basis.
He gets along as well with his parents as any teenage boy does, but like any teenager he's starting to see his parents as actual people who have flaws. As he gets older and learns more about them, he's losing respect for his father and gaining sympathy for his mother.
school & friends
Daphne will be forever grateful that the elder of her sons inherited her intellect, and not their father's. Not the brightest of lads, but with a bit of effort he maintains average grades. He's starting to get lazier though, already having a guaranteed job in the family import/export business doesn't really motivate him to excel. He fully intends to have taken over the family business well before his father reaches retirement age, by force if necessary, because he knows he can do a better job. The one subject he does try in is Herbology - he's obsessed with finding more cost-effective ways to cultivate potion ingredients.
Dorian is extremely loyal to his housemates, particularly the ones he's known since childhood. Even if he thinks someone is an idiot, if they're Slytherin he's automatically on their side against any outsider. He makes a good, solid sort of friend, the kind that people will confide their secrets to but not notice that he rarely offers any in return. He may not be the life of the party, but he'll be there at the end of it, making sure you don't pass out face first in the punchbowl.
personality
Dorian is probably an explosion waiting to happen. His parents thoroughly schooled him in keeping up appearances and because of this, he's perpetually on guard. He's unfailingly polite when it's required of him and does a very convincing impersonation of a gentleman. A lot of what he feels he keeps well hidden from the outside world, and even from himself. On the rare occasions he loses his temper, he tries to make sure no one is around to see it. While it takes a lot to truly anger him, it doesn't take much to piss him off. Little things, like tapping fingers and humming, get to him far more than they should. He has the very bad habit of grinding his teeth when he's frustrated, leaving him with frequent headaches.
The Sorting Hat did not spend an abnormal amount of time sorting Dorian. It suggested in passing, (for reasons Dorian has never understood) Gryffindor before deciding that his deliberate, calculating nature made him a perfect fit for Slytherin. Like any good Slytherin, Dorian has a certain capacity for ruthlessness. He likes to get his own way, on his terms. Victory doesn't feel as sweet if he has to play by someone else's rules to win. He's not averse to a bit of violence or intimidation but on the whole prefers more subtle methods of convincing people to do what he wants. Revenge is not beneath him, but he's willing to wait a very long time to exact it in the perfect manner.
He's not entirely comfortable in his own skin, like he has an itch he can't quite scratch. Some days he's so restless he almost twitches. Deep down, there is a part of Dorian that's bothered by his upbringing, by what's expected of him, and most of all by his inability to ever lose control.
sexuality
Dorian has had a few short relationships with girls, none of which ended especially well. Strangely, this hasn't actually put him off that much. He treats girls like princesses initially, but he tends to lose interest after a while.
He slept with the first of his girlfriends, but none of the following ones. He likes sex; sex is great, but... It's just a little too much control to lose, a little too much to show anyone. He's kind of disgusted that he's such a pansy about it, and wishes he could be more casual about the whole thing.
He's less than entirely straight, but he's not exactly aware of it, and is in no way ready to deal with it right now. And for the record he did NOT enjoy snogging Devlin Flint, thank you very much.
appearance
It would seem the trade-off for getting his mother's brains was getting his father's looks. He's tall and fairly broad, classic beater build. He has a strong square jaw and slightly curly blondish hair, cut short. His overall appearance is usually neat and presentable.
prefect?
He's a prefect, possibly because he was the only one who showed interest in the position. He likes the responsibility and the power. The Prefect's Bathroom was no small incentive either.
quidditch?
He does play, although not on the house team. He's not good enough, but it doesn't really bother him.
three random things
- He knows the exact price (cost and retail) of nearly all of the ingredients used in Potions classes. He dropped Potions after OWLS, but when he did do it, he always preferred the written component.
- He really, really hates pumpkin juice, to the point where it's absurd. Other than that, he'll eat or drink pretty much anything.
- When he was younger, he came across his mother’s stash of romance novels. He decided they were stupid and trashy, but read one all the way through out of curiosity. He would sooner die than admit to reading it.
